Markus Fischer is professor of Plant Ecology, Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Bern (since 2007) and Director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Bern (since 2010). He is guest researcher, Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Institute, Frankfurt (since 2012). Speaker of the DFG-Infrastructure Priority Program Biodiversity Exploratories (since 2006), chair of the DFG Senate Commission for Fundamental Issues in Biodiversity (since 2018) and member of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services - IPBES (since 2018). Earlier, he was Professor at the University of Potsdam (2007-12). PhD in Botany, University of Basel (1996) and Venia legendi in Environmental Sciences, University of Zurich (2001).
