Fischer is Professor of Plant Ecology at the Institute of Plant Sciences in Bern and Director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Bern. Professor Fischer is thus filling the previous gap in the WBGU in the field of ecology and biodiversity. WBGU is currently working on a flagship report on climate protection and sustainable land use.

The reappointment comes after three members have left WBGU prematurely to take on other tasks: Prof Ina Schieferdecker moved to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as Head of Department, Prof Dirk Messner was appointed President of the German Federal Environment Agency and Prof Uwe Schneidewind is running for election as Lord Mayor of Wuppertal.
