Marion Schulte zu Berge to become WBGU's new Secretary General
A geography graduate, she holds a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from the University of Liverpool. During her doctoral studies, she conducted research in collaboration with the UK Department of the Environment in London on the interrelationship between science and policy-making in UK environmental policy. "With its interdisciplinary, systemic approach, the WBGU is a key voice in international sustainability policy that resounds strongly in politics, research and society. It is a great honour for me to put myself at the service of this important player," says Marion Schulte zu Berge.
Most recently, Ms Schulte zu Berge was Managing Director of the Junge Akademie in Berlin, the world's first academy of science for young scientists. From 2013 to 2016, she was an executive board officer, and before that a programme officer at the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The WBGU chairs, Karen Pittel and Sabine Schlacke, welcome the appointment: "Marion Schulte zu Berge is an outstanding science manager who is not only very well networked in the science system beyond Germany's borders but also well-versed in communicating with people in politics and society," says Karen Pittel. And Sabine Schlacke adds: "She is also highly experienced in making interdisciplinary collaboration productive and in playing interface roles between science and politics. These prerequisites and skills are of key importance to us at the WBGU".
