Karen Pittel and Sabine Schlacke elected as chairs of the WBGU

The members of the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) have elected Karen Pittel and Sabine Schlacke as co-chairpersons. Both were already chairwomen during the Advisory Board period up to October 2020. 

Karen Pittel is Director of the Ifo Center for Energy, Climate and Exhaustible Resources in Munich and Professor of Economics at the University of Munich. She has been a member of the WBGU since 2016. 

Sabine Schlacke is Professor of Public Law and Executive Director of the Institute of Environmental and Planning Law at the University of Münster. She has been a member of the WBGU since 2008. 

The WBGU was newly appointed by the German Federal Government in November 2020. The appointment period lasts until the autumn of 2024. The other members of the WBGU are Alexander Bassen (University of Hamburg), Jörg Drewes (Technical University of Munich), Markus Fischer (University of Bern), Sabine Gabrysch (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Charité Berlin), Anna-Katharina Hornidge (German Development Institute and University of Bonn), Hans-Otto Pörtner (Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research) and Anke Weidenkaff (Fraunhofer Research Institution for Materials Recycling and Resource Strategies IWKS).
