Professor for physics of the oceans at Potsdam University (since 2000)
and head of the Climate System Department at the Potsdam Institute for
Climate Impact Research. Focus on the role of ocean currents in climate
change. Scientist at the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute and the
Institute of Marine Science in Kiel (1991-1996). 1999 1 million US-Dollar
Centennial Fellowship Award of the James S. McDonnell foundation (USA).
Memberships: NOAA Panel on Abrupt Climate Change (since 2000); Advisory
board on sustainable development of the state of Baden-Württemberg
(since 2002). Member of the WBGU since 2004.
